Finally, in anticipation of some common questions... Yes, we want to run this again (likely next year), but this is dependent on success next month. No, there is currently no distance learning option. We'd like to develop one if we have sufficient expression of interest.

We're running this in early March, so it's time to get yourself booked in if you'd like to attend. The venue is still TBC, but the dates and costs (£200, or £160 for full time students of any institution) are set. You can book online at

A core theme of this course is accessibility: you don't need to be an artist or trained palaeontologist to attend. If you have a keen interest in animals (fossil or modern) you'll get something out of this.

We'll then start thinking about understanding ancient landscapes, and how we reconstruct them with just as much care as we do our subject animals. Behaviour and the interplay between science and art will form our last lecture sessions, before more reconstruction exercises.

After this, we'll dive into reconstructing fossil species: how do we take a pile of broken fossils and turn them into a completely restored animal? What challenges do we encounter along the way? Practical drawing sessions and specimen examination will inform our discussion here.

The course will begin with a look at the definition and goals of palaeoart - what, exactly, constitutes a palaeoartwork, and how close are our reconstructions to reality? We'll then review over 200 years of palaeoart history.

Needless to say, this is a course on - the process of reconstructing the appearance of extinct animals. A huge amount of effort goes into palaeoart, as we have to carefully research every component of our subjects to ensure our work is in line with contemporary science.

It feels poignant to have been travelling across EU borders into the UK earlier today. From spending a few days abroad with great international friends and colleagues, to retreating into Britain with the door closing behind us... Brexit still feels like a tremendous mistake.

New post! Behind the scenes of my Rhamphichnus , published earlier this month as part of the description of these amazing new pterosaur tracks. See it (and loads of other stuff) in high-res and the WIPs for just $1 a month.

No disrespect to the fellows, but paleoart seems... not diverse at all. I want to help promote the voices of people other than cis white men. If that’s you and you draw prehistoric critters, introduce yourself here and I’ll give you a follow and a RT! Rawr.

A wee additional post for : and I booked into yesterday, so here's Pliosaurus kevani to celebrate. The loop-de-looping calf embodies our excitement for attending the conference and isn't just something I drew on a silly whim, no sir.
