We face threats from foreign adversaries and bad actors around the globe, and these threats are only going to get worse. Here are just a few examples of what we’re facing:

Just over a year ago, the Wannacry attack hit 230,000+ computers around the world — crippling hospitals, banks, transportation systems, and other important institutions. Our intelligence community concluded North Korea was behind the attack.https://www.zdnet.com/article/wannacry-ransomware-crisis-one-year-on-are-we-ready-for-the-next-global-cyber-attack/ …

In the wake of President Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran Deal, we’re already seeing the makings of an increased cyber threat from Iran.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/11/technology/iranian-hackers-united-states.html …

And frankly it’s pretty troubling that the same forces in the Administration who aggressively pushed for the U.S. to exit the Iran deal are now seeking to eliminate the exact position that will be tasked with assessing and responding to Iran’s cyber aggression.

Then there’s China, which we recently learned has been operating a much larger state-sponsored hacking operation than previously known.https://www.cnet.com/news/china-linked-to-cyberattacks-dating-from-2009-report-says/ …

The Russian military has initiated massive cyber attacks against Ukraine and other European nations, which have also impacted U.S. computershttps://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/russian-military-was-behind-notpetya-cyberattack-in-ukraine-cia-concludes/2018/01/12/048d8506-f7ca-11e7-b34a-b85626af34ef_story.html …

Not to mention the Russian threat to our state and local election systems — in 2016, Russia targeted at least 18 state election systems, and although no votes were changed, in some cases they were able to access restricted elements of our election systems.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/08/us/politics/russia-2016-election-hackers.html …

That’s just a snapshot of the threat we face from state actors. We can’t forget about the threat from non-state cybercriminals. The Administration’s own economists estimate cybercrime cost the U.S. economy between $57-$109 BILLION in 2016 alone.https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/cea-report-cost-malicious-cyber-activity-u-s-economy/ …

Here’s the point: we should be investing in our nation’s cyber defense, not rolling it back. We also need to articulate a clear cyber doctrine. I don’t see how getting rid of the top cyber official in the White House does anything to make our country safer from cyber threats.

Look,
@MarkWarner, you are about to lose#Resistance support because of your stunning decision to support and reward torture.#TheResistance has a long memory. Haspel (and others) should be at The Hague, but you (and other Dems) will allow her to lead the CIA?#Betrayed -
Agree! My
#Florida@SenBillNelson will also vote for#GinaHaspel and I do not support that. Socialist Democrats won big in the PA primary, but these republican lite democrats still don't get it. I may as well have Rick Scott as a senator. The devil you know! -
It will only change when
#TheResistance begins to challenge these “Dems” in a primary.#Basta

Warner - you have no leverage w Trump or Bolton after you announced your vote for Gina Haspel for CIA Director. Torture Queen also destroyed tapes against orders. You now want Trump to keep cyber security top job. Too late. Gone.
-
Gina Haspel letter to you doesn't mean sh*t. She had chances to say in hearing that torture was immoral & wrong & that her destruction of tapes was wrong. Her cowardice in saying it in letter to you only proves she only wants YOUR vote. NO leadership. She won't stand up to Trump.

Don't try to look all publicly verklempt when you just keep voting for his appointees and dragging feet on being fully transparent with the American people. We see you, Warner.

He’s in the one percent. They all are
-
No, I think they service the 1%.

Why aren’t checks and balances working to rid us of the swamp?
-
Because folks like Warner talk a lot, but don't have the courage to take action. See: His decision today to vote for Haspel. They all prefer DC to their own constituents.
