This morning the Senate Intelligence Committee will hear from @Jack and @SherylSandberg about their companies’ responses to foreign influence operations on social media platforms. Here’s what’s on my mind:

Today’s hearing is not about “gotcha” questions or scoring political points. Our goal is to begin to tackle the challenges posed by foreign adversaries and other bad actors who are abusing these platforms to undermine our democracy and harm American consumers.

I’ve put out a series of ideas to start this long-overdue national conversation about privacy, data and social media, and I’m hoping to hear some constructive thoughts from these tech leaders this morning. For example:

I’ve put these and other ideas into a white paper that I’ve circulated to get this discussion going. You can read the whole thing here:https://www.axios.com/mark-warner-google-facebook-regulation-policy-paper-023d4a52-2b25-4e44-a87c-945e73c637fa.html …

I appreciate the hearing today but what are you doing with media companies like Alex Jones who takes fake news from @facebook and @twitter and reports on it like it's true. Pizzagate was started on @facebook but Alex Jones made it news. Far worse than it showing up as an ad.

Pizzagate became a huge rumor and definitely had an effect on @HillaryClinton's campaign. This morning I was on @twitter and saw where someone retweeted a post about @HillaryClinton and @ChelseaClinton being satan worshipers. Alex Jones has also promoted this fake news.

If a court of law rules that any media (internet, magazine, newspaper, blog) is false reporting, it should rule that the person or company cannot distribute the fake news for profit. Doesn't infringe on free speech that way. Take away the money and a lot will go away.

Alex Jones needs to be subpoenaed to answer for his interference in the election. He absolutely had a huge impact on voters regarding @hillaryclinton. Fair and free elections should not be hampered by free speech when it's false reporting.

Should the Senate allow a president who is an unindicted co-conspirator to nominate a justice who may well be asked to decide whether that president can be subpoenaed? That was the elephant in the room today. https://www.facebook.com/senatoralfranken/posts/1912125788873294 …
