Let’s be clear: this is not motivated by a sudden onset of fiscal responsibility. This has nothing to do with making government more cost-efficient. It’s just the latest attack in the Trump Administration’s war on federal employees.https://twitter.com/sahilkapur/status/1035206729770917890 …

I’ve worked for years in the Senate to reduce duplicative and wasteful spending, and make government more efficient. If President Trump seriously wants to make that a priority, then I’d be happy to work with the White House on that effort.

But let’s be honest: the President and his party, which controls both houses of Congress, have had every chance over the last 18 months to get serious about tackling our fiscal challenges.

Instead, the President ballooned the deficit by trillions of dollars with a tax giveaway primarily benefitting big business and the wealthiest Americans.

I can think of nothing more hypocritical or disingenuous than to turn around and throw hardworking federal employees under the bus on the pretext of fiscal responsibility.

Congress can and must stand up to the President and reject this assault on our federal workers by passing the 1.9 percent pay raise that the Senate approved on August 1.

In my 26 years working for the federal government, the small raises are often offset by increases in medical insurance. 1.9% doesn’t compare with the millions of tax cuts for the rich. When you consider the blatant waste of money by trump & his cabinet, this is a slap in the face

This graph shows debt as a percent of GDP since 2001. It shows that without the Bush and Trump tax cuts, debt would have been declining as a percent of GDP.

Republicans did this, and then they decided that they just *had* to (but totally didn't want to) try to cut benefits for everyone. They promise they're very sorry, but this is what being responsible is. pic.twitter.com/ibNFiR5isH

          Bobby BOO!th Kogan added,

This graph shows the deficit and primary deficit as percents of GDP from 1792-2028. It shows that there have been blips for major wars and for the Great Depression and Great Recession, but that otherwise the primary deficit has hovered around zero. It's only in this new era that it's expected to remain permanent and large.
This graph shows the average primary surplus from 1792-2016, excluding major wars, the Great Depression, and the Great Recession. Specifically, it has excluded 1811-1816, 1860-1866, 1916-1919, 1929-1938, 1940-1946, and 2008-2016. The average primary surplus over that period was 0.6 percent. It also graphs the average projected primary deficit for 2017-2020. The average primary deficit then is 2.4 percent.
          Bobby BOO!th Kogan @BBKogan
Our national deficit focus has been largely undeserved, essentially because we've been doing good things with our deficits. Deficits during recessions are critical, along w/ some of the wars we've fought. What's going on now - large deficits during good times - is unprecedented. pic.twitter.com/BF4ucyt41I

I really believe that at least part of the motivation for this- coming this week- is extreme jealousy of McCain and his heroic service manifesting in passive-aggressive anger towards all the everyday men and women who toil selflessly within the government and the military.

The Senate passed this raise for Fed employees, and Trump vetoes it. Now he’s talking about another round of Corporate Tax breaks. The idea of taking the money from the poor and middle class and giving it to the rich has taken on a whole new veracity He’s bragging about it.

Here's a good place to start pinching pennies: How about @realDonaldTrump cut his weekend golfing getaways to twice a year. That alone would save the government and tax payers hundreds of millions of dollars.
