You can indicate speakers in captions by enclosing names in square brackets, i.e. [John] if they talk very quickly, you can combine two speakers into one caption on two lines, like below: [John] On today's panel [Mary] we're talking about Subtitles.
I’ll have to check SubtitleEdit when I get home, but I know SCC has a limitation of 128 characters per line, and has a smaller character set than Subrip.
