They might have thought they were helping him out, not necessarily for the money. After they couldn't successfully bait a real thief, maybe they just really wanted to help him make the video and unfortunately resorted to cheating.

You not only made video of the year but tought a master class in how to own up & apologize for a mistake which was clearly not even your fault. Everyone is fallable in believing the true intentions of others. Shows your true self. You are a winner.
