My latest in Outside magazine. It's about camping and cooking. Absolutely nothing about politics or Jews, so completely safe for work. Though the lede features my wife asking me, "Are you watching porn?"
Wait, what?

The response to ‘You People’ from quite a few Jews here and in a few magazines surprises me. Saying it’s not funny, okay. But calling the satirical comedy antisemitic or saying it “endangers” Jewish lives is absurd. When did we become such snowflakes? Loads of Jews liked it, BTW.

Saving Israeli democracy isn't only a matter for Israelis but Diaspora Jews.
In this open letter to North American Jewry, I join with Matti Friedman and Danny Gordis to make that case.

For those debating the merits of ‘You People’ on Netflix. An interesting interview with the co-writer/director. (Full disclosure: I liked the film.)

🧵 This is something new. Not US-Israeli military exercises, which have taken place for years. But this kind of messaging about the kinetic capabilities the US and Israeli militaries bring to the table. It's very welcome. Three things stand out. 1/5

Thumbing through Paul McCartney's book, Lyrics, I'm struck again how the story of the Beatles and of Lennon & McCartney is one of the most beautiful narratives of the postwar era. It unfolds like a great novel, step by step, and you feel the powerful myth emerging in real time.

In the wake of the November election results, Israelis are talking about demographics more than at any time in the past that I can remember. Why am I, a secular and (milquetoast) liberal Jew, cautiously optimistic about Haredi demographics in Israel? (Very long) thread. /1

The data.

In both Europe and the US, the data suggests that Zionists are more antisemitic than anti-Zionists. That might sound crazy. But it's not. Zionism and antisemitism have been partners for a long time. Just ask Theodor Herzl jewishcurrents.org/antisemitic-zi

Mostly a crude attempt to “analyze” and diminish Haberman. But this exchange makes you love her:
“I mentioned her well-documented fear of flying. Is it the claustrophobia that bothers her? She stared. ‘It’s the crashing.’ ”
“True, Israel is not a paragon of democracy…
But Israel is a paragon of the struggle for democracy within near-impossible conditions, a laboratory for testing the strength and limits of democracy under extremity.”

Why is it that New York reporters are sent to helicopter in all over America, but couldn’t get to the George Santos story in their own backyard?

On the one hand, there is a legitimate point to be made about the effects of defunding local news, but boy oh boy the responses to this Timesman's attempt at an explanation are pretty devastating.

To everyone asking why reporters didn't dig up the George Santos story before the election ... a fair question .... ask yourself when you last paid for your local newspaper, like Newsday on Long Island, which covers it day in and out.

Worth reiterating. Fonda is and was a very complicated person and very great actress. 'Klute,' seen here, was perhaps her greatest performance. (I highly recommend the HBO docu about her.)

Comedy genius! Artwork quotes Nazi, with illustration that is, at best, confused and incomprehensible. ("The dog represents the Jews," the kid-artist explains!?) Airport spokesperson shrugs, "Hey, we didn't pick it!" And they didn't. Local Jews did, to fight antisemitism!

Fantastic book review of new D. H. Lawrence biography. A blast to read, and also makes you want to read the book.
When you actually see 'Downstate,' you won't find anything politically questionable or controversial. That's a smear. But you'll be blown away by the best acting I've seen onstage in years from all five lead actors.
It's been too easy for pro-Israel Jews like me to dismiss . But this piece is a watershed. Not because he's criticizing Israel and despairing about the future. That's not new. It's because I know he's right this time.
