Of all the pro-gun tropes, “an armed society is a polite society” might be the most routinely falsified. Heinlein, the science fiction author who originated this, was wrong. An armed society makes the pointless murder of mothers and children routine.https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/27/us/nc-road-rage-shooting-julie-eberly.html?smid=tw-share …

What do I mean by routine? St Louis Childrens treated about 150 severe GSWs in children last year. As of this month, St Louis has had 8 children murdered by guns. The most recent was 9 years old, and was sitting in the car with his mother and infant sibling. One city.

An armed society will be a polite society, as soon as we can guarantee a sane and sober society.

I wonder if the emergence and hyper-specialization/polarization of modern media— the 24/7 news and cable cycle, AM radio and more recently social media have driven social divisions and amplified mental-health instability. Mix this with a country entirely awash in guns and...

I recently tweeted support for a ban + phase-out of all semi-automatic long guns. It’s a compromise but a very big step. I was swiftly flanked by pro-gun hordes making male-dominant violent/sexual threats. Maybe I’m naive, but it seems like a lot of ppl on SoMe are very unwell.

It's less important to me whether the aphorism is wrong (it is) that if that is the kind of society I want to live in (it is not.) The (not very) subtext there is that in an armed society every passing interaction carries a risk of being murdered.

Polite or not, I don't want to live that way.

Heinlein was wrong about so many things.
