.@Skepticscalpel & @RogueRad, for two more, have written about this also. And not in favor of "third leading cause of death."

Current estimates of medical errors are hugely inflated. @BenMazer and I will tackle this subject on a future episode of #OutspokenOncology podcast; you don’t want to miss this discussion. Mark your calendar for the 3/26 episode.

Yep. Medical errors are nowhere near the third leading cause of death, nor are medical interventions.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/are-medical-errors-really-the-third-most-common-cause-of-death-in-the-u-s-2019-edition/ …

I'm guessing that @MarkHoofnagle might have something to say about the claim that medical interventions are the third leading cause of death.

So wait. If you cut her estimate in half it’s still the 3rd leading cause? So she’s doubled the Makary estimate? Guys we predicted this. Medical error is now being blamed for 100% of death. We have reached peak innumeracy.

Ah, but that's not quite it. She's saying medical errors plus medical procedures are the third leading cause of death.

That is less unbelievable, but still a stretch. As am aside, for innumeracy, you really should check out Gary Null's latest "death by medicine" numbers. He tried mightily to get to 1M deaths per year due to medical error, but just feel short.

I like these estimates that not only make us responsible for every death in every hospital but also require us to apparently kill an extra few hundred thousand people a year. So I guess the question now is, who haven’t we killed?

I wonder if her estimate would still be "the third leading cause of death" if the correct estimate for medical error deaths were actually ten times lower than the Makary estimate, which it almost certainly is.

One day a journalist is going to realize there’s a great story in how current estimates of error are 10-20x too high, and the harm done by drowning out observation of actual preventible death in a sea of overestimates.

Sadly, I doubt that that day will ever come. It's far sexier and more sensationalistic to portray medicine as one of the top three causes of death.
