These aren't worthy questions and only make the questioner appear foolish. Excited to hear Rep Lee talk - making this appropriately about disparities.

Dr Stewart brings up engaging the community to address gun violence - this is an excellent point, much of gun violence prevention has nothing to do with restricting access to guns but structural racism.

Lott shows his ignorance of trafficking, suggests Mexico as an example because it has strict gun laws - but it our loose gun laws that allow guns to be trafficked into Mexico! We are their problem as much as anything.

Drugs are hard to control because they're manufactured by criminals. But guns are manufactured by US companies traded on the NYSE. They start out legal! These are legitimate businesses that can be subjected to reasonable legislation to prevent trafficking. Idiotic analogy.

Dr Webster brings up the excellent point of trafficking and using data to identify the crooked gun dealers. This is currently hamstrung by the Tiahrt amendment. Let's see if they mention that in addition to Dickey.

Dr. Stewart again brings up structural violence. This can not be undersold. Here, for an example is research on the enduring effects of racist societal structure that impact gun violence.https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0277953617303398 …

Lott goes back to comparing guns to drugs. Most drugs do not start legal - excepting manufactured drugs that are diverted. Cocaine does not start out in legit factories like guns do and is not distributed through legal dealers. It is not an apt analogy.

But I'm sure when it comes time to enact any policy to address structural violence and inequality in communities of color we'll hear the same Lott who denies race is a factor in police shootings of civilians. He is not an honest actor here.https://townhall.com/columnists/johnrlottjr/2018/08/27/police-shootings-n2513363 …

I'm also pretty sure he's not for total drug legalization either. It's a completely dishonest argument from a dishonest man. I hope someone asks him if we should then legalize heroin?

Representative Clark asks a fantastic question of Lott, "I can't think of any other public health crisis in which you ask for no federal spending, can you?"

They bring up the comparison to cars, also inanimate objects. Cars kill fewer than guns now, despite more cars on the road because of safety. Lott is losing his mind and tries to interrupt the representative. She doesn't give him time. She rocks!

This is what we should be able to do with another inanimate object, through smart policy, and without banning the object. We didn't achieve this by banning cars. Representative Bustos then mentions there is a current active shooter in her district.pic.twitter.com/cwhuvv2TjJ

In closing comments they keep saying we can keep the Dickey amendment as a "guardrail" yet it acts as a ban. No one wants to risk the funding of their entire institution over subjective criteria that your research appears to support gun control. Dickey himself regretted it.

It's not a guardrail, it's a cage, for 25 years it has acted as a cage. It won't stop acting like a cage because they rename it a guardrail.

The ranking member again brings up Mexico as an example of gun control not working. Mexico's gun problem is trafficking from the US. It turns out, your neighbors bad policy affects you, both across international borders and across state borders. That's what trafficking is.

Just look at the ATF trace data from Mexico, these guns are coming from *here* 70% are sourced to US manufacturers. https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/report/firearms-trace-data-mexico-cy-11-16pdf/download …

Enough of this. It's very upsetting to see legitimate academics have to share a table with a hack like Lott. The committee did a poor job, and the other panelists a reasonable job of countering the disinfo, but he still provides cover for the "do nothing" "no problem" liars.
