If you don’t understand what free speech is, you are ideal to be editor of a libertarian rag. They whine about this only when a bigot gets rejected by a private business or group, never when the president, an actual govt official, attacks free speech of protestors or press.https://twitter.com/clairlemon/status/1036752014846246912 …

If you don't support free speech for people you disagree with, you're effectively declaring that you cannot come up with a counter-argument that is more compelling.

It's possible to believe in free expression not merely as a right, but as the lodestar of a free society. Read John Stuart Mill, jackass.

Mill was talking about lawfulness of speech - again, the govt. You don’t own other people’s platforms. People implored (free speech), the New Yorker editors listened, and decided giving their private platform to a bigot was a bad idea. It is a testament to free speech.

If TNY's disinvitation of Bannon constitutes an exercise of free speech (and/or a free press), and it's acceptable to criticize speech one disagrees with while still upholding the importance of the speaker's right to say it...

As for why libertarian twitter isn't exclusively focused on criticising POTUS's appalling tweets, I submit to you that he, unlike David Remnick, does not seem to care one iota for the principles of liberty. We are tough on our friends because we know they can be better.

If you guys are libertarians why do you get upset about this? People are free to criticize. Businesses are then free to accept or reject that crticism and then do what they want with *their* platform. Bannon doesn’t own it. We don’t own it. This is how it’s supposed to work.

The outcry told a business they made a bad business decision and changed course. That’s a smart business not pissing off their subscribers right there. It’s not like guy is being deported for what he said or jailed. These guys just told him you’re bad for our bottom line.

You're suggesting that to be a libertarian requires one not only to support the rights of others to exercise free speech without interference from the state, but to be so elated by the existence of such rights as to never criticize how others choose to exercise them?

To be clear, President Trump, not a libertarian, has suggested that the government regulate private institutions including social media platforms and journalistic publications to uphold some misguided standard of "fairness."
