We will never be as good as we were. We will always be stained with this. It will remain an indelible counterpoint for every wannabe dictator or strongman the US opposes in the future.

There's two ways of looking at it. Some argue that trust is like a mirror, you can repair it but always see the crack. I'm willing to go with this will be an opportunity to restate unequivocally what American values are, and what the US as a country stands for.
