stoked to announce our first preprint & the first original research manuscript that has come out of the lab. here, we look at identifying + interpreting subtypes of mature granule cells in the dentate gyrus of the mouse brain. Here is a quick thread summarizing our findings

Friends, I will start my lab in the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at Academia Sinica (AS) in Taiwan next Fall! I've been helped by so many to pursue my dream. Want to study how cellular biophysics serves functions in behavior? AS has excellent international graduate programs!

Amazing work done by my brilliant lab-sister showing how the hippocampus regulates pfc!

first annual / cembrowski / weidberg holiday party. super fun, despite my inability to obtain the coveted white elephant gameboy mug. feeling very grateful that my first year at was shared with these amazing scientists

Sleep is weird when you think about it. Every day our consciousness emerges out of nothingness and picks up where it left off.

my lab came up for logos for everyones project. with cell-type specificity. this may be my proudest moment as a pi

congratulations to james phillips for winning the 2019 postgraduate award! great to see such recognition of all the hard work & careful thought you put into your science [ case in point: … is already a classic paper ]

cc people who say "this system is low-dimensional" based on GCaMP imaging, which is like saying "my neighbor sure likes bass music" based on what you can hear through a wall.

My lab will be recruiting 1-2 grad students for Sept 2020. My fellow neurotweeps - if you know some talented undergrads interested in doing cool work on the neural basis of decision making and motivated behavior (and live in an amazing city), have them contact me!

am not sure how we will wield such power. but in meantime i will recommend some of my favourite accounts that help to guide the generally rudderless neurotwitter ship:

critical lab neurotwitter update: convinced and to join twitter. our lab's twitter presence now has an astonishing 4 members. assuming each of you now recruit 2 additional members, etc etc, our labs power will soon rival russian bots

we are very excited about these results: they show the most abundant across-blade heterogeneity yet identified, identify subtype-specific rules of mature GC recruitment, and suggest subtype-driven preselection of cellular memory traces at the first stage of hippocampal processing

quantitively, these penk-expressing GCs made up ~75% of all recruited GCs, despite being only ~5% of the population. thus, these cells are recruited at more than an order of magnitude greater than expected by their abundance, and dominate the overall activity of all GCs

leveraging these markers, we identified that penk-expressing GCs were rare (~5% of total GC population), spatially biased to one one blade, and preferentially recruited in behaviour. strikingly, the relationship of abundance-to-recruitment was pretty dramatic:

via single-cell transcriptomics, we found such atypical neurons formed their own distinct GC subclass, and expressed a wide array of marker genes, including proenkephalin (penk). other mature GCs expressed CCK, allowing us to differentiate between the two subtypes

from here, we identified that these atypical, suprapyramidal-blade-enriched GCs exhibited specialized electrophysiological and morphological properties. in particular, we recapitulated and expanded upon features associated with "semilunar granule cells"
