  3. “Poor Washington families last year received about $135 million in cash help. Adjusted for inflation, that number was $436 million in 2010 and over $700 million in 1998. The drop in spending does not reflect a drop in need.”

  4. Maybe Seattle was too quick to eulogize the Alaskan Way Viaduct. We tried to understand what was lost last spring, when the demo began, but only now can the absence be felt. Brad Curran’s latest episode of The Teardown captures that feeling perfectly.

Without the new law, many midsized newspapers might have folded and even The Seattle Times “would have been threatened with bankruptcy within a year or two.” Last-minute federal legislation brings pension relief for community newspapers | The Seattle Times

The Seattle Globalist has run out of money to support any staff. This is horrible news in a city with an already small media landscape, especially for a publication that supported so many young and diverse writers. Consider donating before 12/31 and it will be matched.

I love how Melissa goes first person in this story. Eyman is so intertwined with the media, it makes her, as a stand in for journalism itself, a character in Eyman's story.

NEW: I started writing this piece about Tim Eyman, the anti-tax activist who just notched a win with his latest initiative, about two weeks ago. Then, he announced he was running for governor.

Once at the vanguard of drug liberalization, Washington has fallen behind as others have legalized some psychedelics. Now one group of activists wants to catch up, and then some.

  18. I can get pretty emotional about the news & politics team I’ve been leading here. They’re a brilliant group. Letting go is difficult, but I have full confidence that Donna is going to take them to new heights. And I’ll be just a few ft away if you ever wanna throw me an edit.

  19. Putting together our 2020 polling plan and thinking about this. “In a volatile election, even a perfectly effective poll might not be able to gauge the outcome; a poll can only take the pulse of where voters’ feelings lie in a particular moment.”
