People decided in retrospect that he was a *good* dude, one that deserved statues and a holiday and to be remembered for something he wasn't even the first to do. *That* is how you erase history.

For the people in the comments who were all, "But what about Columbus day???" Welcome to Indigenous Peoples' day. It's not the first. Changing out the colonialist set-dressing isn't that hard. Meaningful systematic change is much more difficult.

The "oh well, at the time..." defenses are almost always centered around the worst people and practices of a given time. It ranges from the assumption that there had never been a moral debate around slavery to more recently acting like the Iraq war had universal support.

Same and I can't believe I didn't know cuz I've done at least *some* research before to pull up exact facts in arguments so I didn't get something off slightly and the person be like "lol you donT knOw anYthINg"
