YEAH! Got this incredible email today from a client for whom we did a site review and made a bunch of recommendations. Their main terms were on page 2 and 3. And now they're #2 for their most important keyword. Improved E-A-T, internal linking and much more.

A Recent Google Continuation Patent tells us that Google may look at over 5 million distinct features (so much for 200 ranking factors). I'll be blogging about that patent shortly.

  3. We're mostly through several site reviews, and there is a theme we're seeing pop up often for Aug 1 hit sites. Many have sites that are presenting themselves as informational sites, but then work hard to funnel ppl to buy a product/service. Often in a way that's a bit deceptive.

  4. The new links report for "most recent" links from GSC beta lists them as "last crawled". It used to say, "first discovered". "Links" is now changed to "target page" which actually doesn't make sense as the target page would be the page it's pointing at. Hmmmm. 🤔

  5. From the new documentation on links in beta GSC. Google is so confusing when it comes to giving us disavow information. If we can ignore spammy links, why is this necessary? I have 2 ideas: 1) Could be helpful in hacking cases 2) There are other link algos outside of Penguin

Just finished grabbing notes from the Jul 27 help hangout with (for the newsletter). Wanted to say once again, thank you John for all you do to help site owners. There is so much great information in there!

I agree. We've had a few more requests for help with unnatural links manual actions in the last couple of weeks. Looks like Google may be handing more of these out now.

It does look like there was some kind of tweak over the weekend (or perhaps Friday) to the update. Many sites that saw gains Aug 1 saw more gains at this time.

Hopefully I can get some time to look at GA profiles for a bit today, but I'm hearing a lot of rumbling about further algo turbulence going on.

I'm not seeing any obvious recoveries as of yet. That said, I've been mostly offline all weekend. I'll let you know if I do see some.

This was recorded a while back, but still is good info on E-A-T.

This is new to me too. Looks like Google is sending notifications of site migrations that may have gone awry.

The local update (which was likely started Jul 31, not Aug 1) is still a bit of a mystery. Lots of SERPS missing local packs, and a whole lot of filtering/unfiltering going on.

Anyone want to weigh in on this ranking mystery? If you have a comment, I'd love for you to leave it on the help forum thread. (as I won't be on Twitter too much today.) Any thoughts ? Thanks!

One of the observations made by and others about the August 1 Google update was that not showing authoritative authors for content may have been a factor. In my latest for I cover evidence that author authority and reputation are indeed important.

Good example of how long it can take to see a surge. The site got hammered during the 9/18/17 update, then saw more negative impact during the 4/16/18 update, and then finally started to surge during the 8/1/18 update. That's nearly one full year. "Long-term" can mean LONG-TERM.

I need to up my "guess the animal game". All my ten year had to say is "Does it live in Antarctica?"

Reminder: now more than ever is a good time to refresh on these 23 questions from Amit Singhal - originally from 2011 but I think VERY relevant to the last Google update
