That so many deaths are ‘unidentified or labelled as cardiac arrest’ is not surprising as someone who’s from a family of generations of migrant workers. When my relative died in Saudi Arabia, he was labelled accordingly with no access to his body despite Muslim burial rules.

I met Nepali people in Malaysia who would rather go back to Nepal than stay another second in Malaysia, having felt police brutality of the highest order. MoUs between Nepal and Malaysia did little to lessen the violence and degradation faced by Nepali people.

To pay off recruitment debts, including accommodation/food/transport, they cannot resist for fear of being cast out by employers (and becoming ‘illegal’ in Malaysia’s eyes), so they withstand punishing working conditions and brutal treatment from authorities.

I’m glad that this judgement from the Supreme Court will go some way towards accounting for those deaths, but it doesn’t upset the imbalance of power that will allow these harmful recruitment practices to continue. We have an obligation to protect migrant workers.
