    From the collection, a banded onyx gem engraved with an owl standing on the edge of a bowl containing a poppy; in the field is a sun & a crescent. The gem dates to between 1st-3rd century AD. For the Romans both owls and poppies were connected with death.

    The had a day of fasting on 4th October to honour the goddess Ceres. She was responsible for agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships. It is thought that the fast day was created to appease the goddess over the rise of the cult of Magna Mater.

    The Goddess of Hope by Bertel Thorvaldsen and completed in 1859. Spes was the Goddess of Hope. She represented the hope of fruitful gardens & fields, abundant offspring, and prosperity to come. She is usually shown as a beautiful lady carrying a bud about to open.
