The Senate must obtain all relevant testimony and information, including about the violation of the Impoundment Act. My latest, in the NYT.

Sudan new govt appears to be enlisting Israel’s help to boost ties with the US. Its end game? Lifting of state sponsor of terror sanctions designation What’s interesting is that the US is engaging the military side of Sudan’s govt more than the civilian one

100% predictable. Everyone has spent days looking for tea leaves of support and how this time was different. But when you put all the Arab states together this is what you get. Total rejection of Trump’s plan

The Senate voted yesterday not to subpoena witnesses or documents, and they charted a path forward to end the impeachment trial. Starting Monday, each senator will have up to 10 minutes each to speak. It’s The Impeachment, Day 10:

Congratulations to the 51 Senators who voted to prematurely cut off receiving material evidence & testimony to learn the full scope of the president’s efforts to withhold defense assistance & pressure a foreign leader in exchange for political help. You weakened a country tonight

7/ This is a CRAZY view of the world (I'm just explaining, not excusing), but I think it's important for everyone to see the prism through which many Rs (not all) view impeachment. For both D and R Senators, the trial is about threats to democracy. We just see different threats.

6/ Republicans don't love Trump, but they do believe that if they don't stand up to this deep state/media cabal RIGHT NOW, then they set a precedent that will allow this same conspiracy to take down every future Republican president.

5/ You see, many Republicans don't think any self respecting conservative would EVER work for government or the mainstream media, so all these people testifying and breaking stories MUST be Democrats, and they must have political agendas.

4/ For them, this trial is ALSO about evidence of the most serious threat to democracy - an anti-Trump whistleblower, working with secret Republican-hating Democratic civil servants, backed by the liberal media, attempting to take down a conservative, Republican president.

3/ Many (most?) Republicans, as shown in Sen. Alexander's statement, also think Trump is reckless and dangerous. But what you need to understand is that they think there exists a MUCH bigger threat to democracy than Trump - the deep state/media elite conspiracy.

2/ Democrats, like the majority of Americans, view Trump as a threat to democracy, and this trial put on evidence of the most serious example of this threat - his use of his official powers to destroy his political rivals and cheat in an election.

1/ For tonight's impeachment behind-the-scenes, something different: I want to tell you my theory about why Democrats and Republicans are on different planets during this trial. I want to tell you why we could only get 2 R votes today against a rigged trial. This is important.

I remember the Clinton impeachment well, and I remember that when the Senate voted ... it all felt OVER. Final. Settled. The issue had been litigated, the voters had spoken in Nov 1998, and the accusers had to own themselves beaten. This fight ... it's not even half time

I’ve honestly been trying to keep an open mind about what witnesses like John Bolton and Mick Mulvaney could tell us. But I don’t see how this vote to block witnesses is anything but an admission that what they'd say under oath would not be good for this President.
