some insight for prospective/current PHD students [thread]: I have a lot undergrad debt, no choice. got into a funded PhD I was relieved. But what isn’t explained to a 1st gen scholar of color is to get CV lines, go to conferences, give talks, etc, requires ALOT of extra money.

I’m saying all this as someone who has been on the ground this past year with prospective first gen students interested in doctoral study. So so many think a funded package is enough. That you just do the research & the writing & that’s all it takes.

again, you have to pay to play. If you are someone who doesn’t have parents/partner/other financial support, this means: you have to be willing to go into debt or even have credit to go into further debt, to do extra hustling, to be always searching for more funding.

& this commitment to forking over a lot of extra money to participate will happen from before you start your program, through it, when you search for jobs, & even when you end. You have to understand that very clearly: this will be in every part of the process.

Doctoral study changed my life. I love the work I did, people I met. But I hope we can work to demystify this aspect of doctoral work which is not discussed openly AT ALL. I hope these words can help others make informed decisions and form strategies for better care/survival.
