Waving a Puerto Rican flag is great, but if pride doesn’t come with solidarity or liberation then what are we really doing?

People can line up to do this—for all the world to see— because there are zero social consequences for displaying anti-Indigenous racism in the US.

To echo Marcos: Those of y’all wanting to apply or are in it & wanna chat, my DMs are always open. If you can’t, just @ me & I’ll message first. Part of grad school success comes from the community, and I’m happy to listen to you. I’m no expert but I can try to help. Solidarity!

for too long the procedures & protocols of higher education have been mystified. It’s about time we work against that. Complain, protest, check out, support others, be grumpy, find pleasure & joy, &, most importantly, celebrate yourself, celebrate the work you’re doing.

we need to be informed about the reality. As hard as it is. Grad school is a financially burdensome undertaking. But there is hope in not being surprised by all the hidden costs, the emotional rollercoaster it will be, in planning ahead as much as possible.

my last tweet produced a lot of feelings. Many who have experienced trying to make it through their graduate studies despite the odds. Many who are. Many who are contemplating if it’s worth it. All of those feelings are valid. All of it.

to prospective/current graduate/doctoral students: Grad school is HARD. The structures in place are unfair, exploitative, & require such financial hardship. Strategize. Make a decision that feels right. Ask for help. Make demands. I’m rooting for you!💚💜💚

I had a professor pet me on the head once IN CLASS and a ‘well-meaning’ lady brush the hair out of my eyes in an elevator UNASKED and without consent. If y’all need any more examples of everyday ableism, this is it 👇👇👇

This thread is so true. This is one reason why the AEA Mentoring Program () is important. Providing mentoring and funding to attend conferences is critical for graduate students, especially those at less well resourced institutions.

I know that this is nowhere close to how devastating it must be to devote a decade+ to academia to end up unemployed & in debt AND I’m watching colleague-friends who produce crucial & brilliant work abused & (rightly) looking towards quitting & I feel sick all. the. time.

This is the most important thread on Twitter if you’re someone considering PhD work. This is what no one tells you when you apply/get in: “you have to pay to play.”
