E' probabile che molto presto un'importante area politica inizierà a invocare un divieto alle esportazioni di gas, come soluzione per evitare razionamenti e far scendere i prezzi. Un paio di figure per mettere in prospettiva la discussione

FULL STATEMENT from Germany’s Economic Minister Robert Habeck on the country’s gas crisis. Absolutely must read. “In order to reduce gas consumption, less gas is to be used to produce electricity. Instead, coal-fired power plants will have to be used more”

We could have started conservation campaigns back in 2021.We spent public money to sustain consumption instead, banking on sucking all available LNG around. But hey no one could have imagined that Putin could shut off the tap once all alternatives were maxed out

The problem with the Spanish cap.Incentivises gas absorption by the power sector, disincentivises storage. Limited EU-wide problem given the relative insulation of Spain from company- but not an option for i.e. Germany of Italy as would put at risk the continent's security

🇺🇸 Baker Hughes is withdrawing its services from all 🇷🇺LNG projects - Gazprom's Sakhalin-2 and Novatek's Yamal LNG. The finalization of Arctic LNG-2 is in question, as the project depends on the delivery of gas turbines which Russia failed to substitute.

Which adds further evidence to the risk of lock in. Gas infrastructure is sticky not just for its huge capex, cumbersome physical materiality and payback time - but also because one doesn't just shut the thing down at will. Decommissioning is complex.

Russian gas that won't go to Europe can't go elsewhere.Unless one seals the wells, where will it go?Partly straight into the atmosphere-flared or not.Don't know whether we can talk about weaponisation of emissions but surely such gas divorce might turn into a disaster for climate
