It shows, but in a good way! Always looks interactive, like an adventure game where we can control the hat (think monkey island etc.)
Also: the hat could find an old alchemist lab or table, be curious and get in contact with (potion)fluids that change something 
and perches for characters! 
even a witch hat collecting potions doesn´t make any sense. Was to lazy to draw a humanoid character

Temporarily changing the colour/"mutating" the hat - gets some appendage? Giving extra abilities for the next challenge/adventure ahead - throwing the ideas out
