Damn... "thanks a bunch" = a sarcastic/ironic version of saying thank you. 
Oh boy, and I often used it to thanks people here on twitter for their comments.

Well even just saying "thanks" can sound sarcastic, it just depends on the context ;) if someone says you look nice today, thanks would sound positive. If someone says you look stupid today, thanks might seem sarcastic :)
True! Thanks a lot, Jannick!! I just googled the phrase and the first results were about the sarcastic use. Hard to see the little differences, if you are not a native speaker.

Yeah for me too. I were on a plane once where I asked some if I could pass them and they said "sure, what ever" I thought they where being rude but the person were smiling at the same time, making me super confused
