...Not entirely true. If used with an exclamation, like "Thanks a bunch!" then it seems genuine. Or with some kind of emoji. "Thanks a bunch" on it's own can be interpreted either way. But if it's with a period, it's likely to be seen as passive aggressive or sarcastic.

Well even just saying "thanks" can sound sarcastic, it just depends on the context ;) if someone says you look nice today, thanks would sound positive. If someone says you look stupid today, thanks might seem sarcastic :)

True! Thanks a lot, Jannick!! I just googled the phrase and the first results were about the sarcastic use. Hard to see the little differences, if you are not a native speaker.

this is why I always use lots of exclamation marks and emojis -
