I mean, I've seen some "limited edition collectors specials" go for prices that would make custom to order 3d prints more than viable, but it takes confidence to ask that sort of money which I frankly lack.

I think, the "online for free" thing will be my route with them, since I have no ideas/plans, how to get money with such characters. :)

There are many 3d printing services that seem to do quite well, but yes I 3d print my own design and sell them along with the reproduction rights to war-gaming companies.
