    Smartphones give great video, often just by tapping the “record” button. But good SOUND is a lot harder to achieve. This looks like it was shot with just the phone - no external mic. Can you make out what Kay Burley says when she turns her head away from the phone…?

    Within this wonderfully-shot piece by mojo master , it’s worth looking at his piece-to-camera. The blur of the buildings behind him while he remains in focus is done using Cinematic Mode on the latest iPhone 13, a feature previously only available to “big” cameras.

    It may be a cliché, but “turn it off and turn it on again“ does often do the trick. I couldn’t AirDrop a video between two of my iPhones, so I rebooted them both and then it worked immediately.

    One other thing perhaps worth mentioning. In good light, the face detection/auto focus is excellent. Which really makes it quite easy to execute the PTC - which is one of the trickier things to do in .

    One slight correction - it has been possible to get background blur on a smartphone for a while, as long as you’d bought this kind of lens for £250 or so. (Very discreet and subtle, isn’t it?!)

    On a technical level, cinematic mode only works at 30fps - not the preferred 25 or 50fps for TV in UK, Ireland & much of the world except North America. But the shot got converted to 25fps without problems because stayed still and there was good light.

    Apparently it’s the name for a “film look”, available as an in-app purchase. I preferred it when they named looks and filters after or , although I fear that “Settle” has been scheduled for 32nd Flumptember 2023 🙄

    Got a curious alert from when casting it to a Mac via mirroring. According to Wikipedia, Inanna was an ancient Mesopotamian goddess associated with love, beauty & war. Not really sure how this relates to the gold standard video filming app on smartphones ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
