I’ve learned it’s still actively used in AAVE today to mean sex! I had only heard it used in a contemporary sense to mean “mess with” or “hang out with” or “like” but not “to have sex with.” Anyway, that’s on me, my ignorance, and I’m sorry about that.https://twitter.com/MaraWilson/status/1273751009127358465 …

One of the most jarring things about reading books written in the late 70s or early 80s is that when they talk about sex they use the phrase “fucking WITH”, e.g., “I’ve been fucking with him for three months now” would mean “I have been having sex with him for three months”

Also it’s REALLY worth looking at the language most white Americans use and realizing just how many phrases come from AAVE

I think that one's pretty disputed, right? The most common etymology is that it's an initialism

American English is such a conglomeration pidgin. I think our big island got way out of hand compared to British English. It's always cool to find out the etymology of the vernacular I use daily. Never boring.

I still use fo-shizzle on a semi-regular basis as an informal confirmation. Thanks Snoop Dogg.

I had never heard of AAVE until just now. Googled it. Now, I think I'm about to get lost down an internet rabbit hole.

So much of our language is AAVE! Woke, bougie, glow up, spilling tea, etc. Dialect fusion is normal, but the attitude AAVE is "unprofessional" or "unintelligent" is just outright racism when white people appropriate it, and suddenly the words are fine.

This might be the first time I've seen a non-linguist use the term AAVE and it makes me extremely happy 😍

In many cases not just AAVE, but also much of US slang originates in Queer Black culture, or in larger QPOC culture. Check out the documentary, Paris is Burning, to see origin of slang terms from the New York Ballroom scene of the late ‘80s-early-‘90s . Shady, Yasss, voguing, etc
