I would wager that most Americans have no idea how behind the rest if the developed world the US is in regards to mass transit systems. After living in Europe/Asia I can say the US has a lot of catching up to do. SF Bay Area BART is a good local system but has a small foot print.

It's an unfair comparison because so much of Europe and Southeast Asia is built on having compact cities rather than the suburbs seen in most American urban areas. I'm positive most Americans are aware. But a couple major transit systems in the US were neglected for some time.

Well when NYC sends more than it receives I think they are getting the short stick! Unlike some states New York sends more funds to the federal gov than it receives. It finds the low tax states!

No- the issue is that the NYC subway runs 24 hours a day. Things just get slightly updated instead of overhauled because you need a huge influx of cash to update the system.
