Ways Shaykhzāda Jamāl al-Dīn tries to kill his rival Ṣafī al-Dīn: -burn him alive in his khalwat -shoot him with arrows -feed him poison honey -entice him onto a boat & sink it read on to find out if any of these schemes work! http://thicketandthorp.com/2020/01/10/the-attempted-assassination-of-shaykh-%e1%b9%a3afi-al-din-by-the-coward-shakhyzada-jamal-al-din/ …pic.twitter.com/ZXRhQFk9Iz

I'm just dabbling in the weird wild worlds of the late late medieval Islamicate for deep background to my book project, but my Doktorvater is currently working on a book on lived Islam in late medieval Anatolia and I'm a little jealous, this stuff is so much fun

some things that have happened in a 15th c. (prob.) Turkish menāḳıb I'm slowly reading through: -2 saints turned into 1 rock pigeon w/2 heads -saints gifted their hard-working 'dear little dīv' to one lucky guy -Ḥācim Sulṭān cut a mule in 2 w/his wooden sword, didn't say why

try as hard as you want but you will never be as chill as this bro hanging in an 18th c. Ottoman poetry compilation, having been excised from a Mughal (probably) manuscript and pasted here. not that this dude's worried about the move, he's cool (Bein. Lib. Probably the earliest extant Hummus recipe dating back to 14th century AD in cookbook written in Cairo: a cold purée of chickpeas with vinegar and pickled lemons with herbs, spices, and oil

Yes, knotted ta marbuta is found across the Malay world but especially in Java, and in very elaborate forms, probably because of a (sub)conscious affinity with a similar decorative scriptural element in Javanese script, seehttps://www.academia.edu/7477256/Beautifying_Jawi_between_calligraphy_and_palaeography …

A blessed Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple (ie Candlemas among other names)! Enjoy this charming and vibrant rendering of the Christ Child's encounter with St. Symeon, from a 17th century Armenian Gospel (Bodleian Library MS. Arm. d. 13):pic.twitter.com/DP4VYkA6YA

"[T]he poets, following their sick natures and distorted tastes, began to write confused, vain, and nonsensical poems. They placed in their poetry insipid meanings instead of inspired truths, ugly contents...instead of fine rhetorical devices and attractive innovations"

I think this Qur'an (Staats. zu Berlin Diez A fol. 16) is probably Malay in origin, based on the decorative scheme, script, other elements; it's listed as dating to 1591 which seems to me fairly early- anyone out there with more comprehensive knowledge who perhaps could confirm?pic.twitter.com/akzrrpMAK3

As the Coptic-illustrated Arabic sīra literature discussed last week would also suggest, certain genres at least of 'Islamic' literature (and their visual artistic repertoires) were clearly not restricted within confessional or linguistic boundaries but circulated far and wide

In terms of shared motifs, compare the 'div' in these illustrations to jinn in other Islamicate contexts, such as those from a copy (Bodleian Library MS. Bodl. Or. 133) of Kitāb al-bulhān, of late medieval production but modified by an Ottoman owner:pic.twitter.com/P3FtxHRHz3

Might texts such as this provided inspiration and 'scripts' for these neo-martyrs? Or was a text like this- bound together with, among other things, an epic rendering of the story of Alexander the Great- more akin to 'popular' entertainment? Or might both be true?

Besides the interesting mix of styles and motifs in this manuscript version of her tale, it's notable that the 17th century- probably when the manuscript and its images were executed- saw numerous Armenian (and Greek and Coptic) 'neo-martyrs,' in both Ott. and Safavid lands

As you might have guess from here title, Great Martyr Irene is eventually martyred, though she appears in dreams afterwards and works wonders despite having died in the flames:pic.twitter.com/6grtJzIBF5

She undergoes various trials and tribulations, such as being cast into a pit of vipers or being thrown to wild horses, the latter being especially unsuccessful as shown in the depiction here, coming back to bite the perpetrator (her dad) in the arm:pic.twitter.com/NWtKwfJbyG

In the story, Irene, initially locked away in a tower by her father fearful of her converting to Christianity and dashing his plans for her marriage; as usual, locking a strong-willed woman in a tower doesn't work and Irene converts, refuses marriage, and starts smashing idolspic.twitter.com/8SON2G2kqM

St. Irene the Persian was said to have lived in the 4th century Sassanian Empire, though the illustrations in this manuscript reflect much later Islamicate art conventions (such as the divs) and then contemporary Ottoman dress, plus Armenian iconography:pic.twitter.com/X4FPggZIlI

And now, the mystery Ottoman Armenian manuscript from which I shared the turbaned fellows earlier in the week. Staatsbib. zu Berlin Ms. or. quart. 805 contains multiple texts, some illustrated; the first I'll share is that of the story of the Martyr Irene, here talking with a divpic.twitter.com/YXyx5DS3Fq

Other questions could be raised, as well;
@tuhfatulhind had some especially apropos thoughts in addition to the sorts of things I outlined above. I'd love to hear from others, either with an interest in participating or simply with suggestions for other avenues of approachPrikaži ovu nitHvala.
