Lured out by the beautiful afternoon today. Hills and glens looking stunning in the low winter light and sprinkle of snow.

The re-alignment of the west Quoich track is now complete after it was washed away by Storm Frank. The old section of track has been re-instated and the Quoich water now runs wild !!

Together with Glyn Jones we have just produced the 2019 Deeside Black Grouse Newsletter. 532 lekking males were recorded across 11 estates with 128 leks being visited in 2019.

Good to see our three new interpretation boards in situ that discuss the pinewoods and our management of the woodlands on the estate. Thanks to the players of the Postcode Lottery for funding this interpretation.

We recorded a mean annual pine seed viability of 18% in our ground disturbance trial area. This is lower than previous studies. The low viability may be due to the isolation of many of the trees which results in high levels of self pollination and lower levels of seed viability.

We are using remote cameras to monitor frequency of visits by hares and deer to some of our rare montane willow populations. This information will help to inform our future management of these sites.

Feeling quite wintry high up Glen Derry today. Lovely low winter light catching a tor on Beinn Mheadhoin.

What a difference a day makes in the weather. A wander off the beaten track today. Great to see willow thriving higher up in Glen Lui and pines advancing up the hill.

The damp weather followed by last nights cold temperatures must have been just right for the formation of "hair ice". This is only the second time we've noticed it this wnter at Mar Lodge.

Been writing up our regeneration monitoring in the last week. The photos of the plots give great visuals of the change at Mar Lodge over the monitoring period.

Earlier in 2019 we reported that this was a mast year for Scots pine at Mar Lodge. This year was also a major mast year for birch. More birch seed fell this year than in the four previous years combined!

The Sphinx snow patch sits in the Garbh Choire Mor and has only melted eight times in the last 300 years. Four of those times have been in the last twenty years. This year, for the first time since 2016, it clung on by the skin of its teeth.
