There is a question for me underlying your definition: between “appropriating a tool for a purpose not envisaged by its designers” and “a tool designed to be a space for exploring practice”.

Not sure I can :) From memory, your evocation of "folk interface" suggested taking tools out of context (at least the context implied by their author) and 'owning' them as a creator. I see this but wondered how it might also relate to an interface designed to be "owned". PTDNMS.
