Help solve a mystery.
A few times a day I pick up my iPhone and somehow trigger this state: the lock screen slides down to make room for a strange black area + arrow above.
Haven’t a clue what this mode is or what it does. Can’t find any other interaction affordances… wat?

Mystery quickly solved 🙏 Thanks for the help!
TIL about the "reachability" feature - support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/ip
Funny I couldn't pattern match enough to figure out how I was triggering it - turns out by lightly double-tapping the home button.

Now that I know this feature exists and I've learned how to trigger it, I've suddenly found it indispensable.

It’s called “reachability” and was designed for iPhone with larger screens. To activate you have to swipe on the navbar towards the bottom of the screen. It’s meant to make everything reachable with one thumb

Accessibility - Touch - Reachability, allows you to swipe down on the home bar thingie to reach the top with one hand

This is for easy reach to the corners. The setting for this is in the accessibility.
Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Reachability (turn if off).

I kind of recall reading somewhere it has to do with accessibility features for people with handicapped fingers that can’t reach the top of the device
