hopefully will have a responsive (& accessible, highlightable) authoring tool prototype for this format in the coming months!

1/ Rereading @maxkriegers "Chatting with Glue" piece this morning. Still a classic. Wish there were way more visual-spatial essays around the web. I think we get hung up on calling them "comics." Comics are a distinct visual culture people believe requires drawing skills twitter.com/maxkriegers/st…

So glad you're working on that! Such a tricky situation that if folks don't know how to code the medium of the web is very limiting. Learning enough CSS, SVG & JS to make interactive visuals is non-trivial. More accessible tools certainly part of the solution.

Even with the full power of CSS, it's incredibly difficult to make these layouts responsive!! hoping to explore more soon:

(1/??) Been thinking with @glitchyowl about dynamic comic authoring for the browser. By dynamic I mean semi-interactive and responsive. By comic-for-browser I mean content laid out in scrollable narrative form. Beyond the panel grid and more serpentine. mobile.twitter.com/glitchyowl/sta

I have mixed feelings about responsiveness. Digital text is a paste, squeezable to fit any container width β€”magically convenient & useful, but forsaking the beauty of spatiality. Would love better tradeoffs, like your serpentine flow, but I can see why it's incredibly hard! πŸπŸ’›

Agreed, it feels like there's an irreconcilable issue between spatial communication and variable screen sizes. There's only so much you can do to make a composition work from 340px all the way up to 1200+ Also, Gigantic Beard That Was Evil is such a stellar piece 😍
