lately i’ve enjoyed Shape Up from Ryan Singer which combines some underlying agile concepts with design and research approach that produces solid functional artifacts for building software this is what we use at egghead currently basecamp.com/shapeup

what’s also interesting with approaching your portfolio business app with actual process is that you can use the process artifacts (story, spec, pitches, research, diagrams, flow charts, etc) and keep a development journal β€œwhat should i write for my blog??” πŸ‘†

i’d strongly recommend β€œthinking smaller” to start. try out different processes. implement core features first iterate consider not trying to β€œclone Jira” and instead reverse engineer a core aspect of Jira, create a spec, user stories, wire frames, etc and implement just that

part of real-world process is dealing with constraints the reality of time, budget, capabilities, team composition, and all of the other factors that make software difficult and expensive!

process and iteration are critical to delivering software if you can β€œshow your work” in this regard, it’s going to stand out more imo β€œhere’s how i broke down this feature to deliver the core functionality for customers” ⭐️

a focus on code quality, testing, and accessibility is something i’d strongly recommend as well a11y testing, unit testing, integration testing, functional testing, docs, design patterns, code structure, automation, developer experience this shit can be worth doubling down on

style shifts, sometimes alarmingly fast 😭 process, patterns, and quality are often more evergreen 🌲 bedrock, long-game
