Wait - Tufte sees this kind of projection as an impediment to understanding? 🤯 What does he propose instead? Sounds like I have some reading to do!

He doesn’t seem to be condemming it entirely. Simply that direct labels are preferable. Closer 1:1 mapping of meanings and visuals is better - encoding requires the reader to figure out the encoding system first, then read the graphic. Expecting later chapters expand on it...
