2/ To be fair, the original culprit was Aristotle who defined it as purely figurative - hence we all framed it as poetic fluff for centuries...

3/ All the linguistics and cognitive science research that distinguishes figurative from conceptual only began to gather steam in the 90's so we're a few decades into understanding this all on a deeper level. P.s.
