Why does every single icon design tutorial I come across focus on how to use the design tool to make nice shapes rather than teaching how to even come up with what to draw in the first place? Anyone seen something that teaches the latter?

I'm trying to create icons to represent our different migration options but finding it hard to figure out what to draw to represent them. I know how to use vector tools to create shapes etc, I'm just having trouble with the ideation part of illustrating as it's not my forte.

For those following along at home with my icon saga, I just uploaded a WIP shot of where I'm at with these icons to Dribbble: dribbble.com/shots/7553441- Think it's really coming together! :)

I think just boxes say "storage" but boxes with an arrow moving to the right or motion lines would say "migration" much more.
Also birds flying south for the winter could be a funny association - one tiny bird for small progressing up to a big flock of larger birds for big
