Are they at least announced? NYC has had multiple unannounced firework shows recently, and it freaks people out. Just random loud explosions with no warning.

Well, unofficially announced by the precedent of history 😁 – yesterday was Guy Fawkes Night (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawke) so it was to be expected. I also live near a footy stadium who are very liberal with their fireworks budget haha
