5/6 Full data collection is complete as of this month, with 19 labs, ~70 scientists, and 700 dogs ultimately participating in our first study. Stay tuned for our updated findings across this large and diverse sample, which we’ll share here: psyarxiv.com/f86jq/ #AnimBehav2023

4/6 Our first pre-registered project studied pointing comprehension. Pilot data w/ 61 dogs showed they followed points if preceded by ostensive cues (eye contact, high pitched tone), but not if preceded by nonostensive cues (downward gaze, throat clearing). #AnimBehav2023
Violin and dot plot of dogs’ performance (N=61) across the Non-ostensive and Ostensive conditions (a) and the Odor Control condition (b) of preliminary data. The red dashed lines show the chance level of 0.5. Dots represent the mean proportion correct for each individual. The grey lines connect dots representing the same individuals. The error bars represent 95% within-subjects confidence intervals; the filled circles on top of the error bars show the fitted model.

2/6 Why dogs? Studying dogs can inform basic science questions about behavior & cognition, evolution, and even human health. Plus dogs are prevalent in our society and homes, so there are practical & applied benefits—with welfare implications—to understanding them. #AnimBehav2023

What is ManyDogs 1? It's a multi-lab study investigating how dogs respond to different types of human pointing gestures. We have designed a single protocol for labs around the world to implement with their local dog populations. Interested in joining? Here's a quick overview!
Contributor Sign-Up for ManyDogs 1.
Step 1: Read the ManyDogs Manual and Study 1 Protocol.
Step 2: Prep information about your site, including ethics status, a floor plan of your testing space, and information about the stimuli you'll be using.
Step 3: Register your lab through the online Contributor Survey (see the Manual) and upload your documents.
Step 4: Join our communication network
Step 5: Train your research team on the protocol and send in experimenter practice videos for feedback and standardization.
Step 6: Start collecting data!

4. Piloting with 46 dogs across 3 labs—including 15 breeds and mixed-breed dogs—demonstrated high rates of participation, with 42 dogs completing the entire testing session! We have filed a pre-registration () of our methodology and planned analyses. #AnimBehav2021

3. By using a standardized protocol while allowing for certain variation across labs, our collaboration will address the #replicability crisis and explore the effects of methodological variables such as indoor/outdoor testing, room size, and owner presence. #AnimBehav2021

2. Our first project, ManyDogs1, seeks to 1) replicate the finding that dogs follow human points on a large scale, and 2) explore whether dogs perceive human points as informative or imperative by varying the ostensiveness (eye contact & name use) of the gesture. #AnimBehav2021
