New blog: we're still seeing the '40% insect extinction rate' in media reports. Here's why that number is not accurate

  3. Surprise office visitor! Trying to identify difference between the native house centipede (Allothereua maculata) & introduced European species (Scutigera coleopterata)...pretty sure this is native one

“He was a tireless campaigner for the conservation of the monarch butterfly and the pine and fir forests where it hibernates.” RIP Raúl Hernández. His death- along with the death of Homero Gómez- demands immediate investigation and full accountability

Coming rain for eastern Australia over next 8 days will go a long way to reducing fire risks but problems of flash-flooding and ash/soil contamination for waterways and reservoirs may be unwelcomed outcome in some places.

In Kuwait, there's a market for locusts, but they are importing them from Saudi Arabia to meet demand

Interesting pair of insect stories popped up in my news feed.... The huge locust swarm which started in late 2019 is still affecting east Africa

Nice one ; looks like a male Aedes vittiger. These are big mozzies that appear in reasonable numbers following rain, their eggs have been sitting in woodland and grassy depressions for months just waiting for these suitable environmental conditions!

even after extreme fires upper wetlands are an important part of ecosystems. Sedges on the edges sprouting up.

Great story from NZ via . Wetlands aren't just about fish, frogs & birds. They are critical habitat for insects, including bees & other pollinators

Happy ! London's wetlands help clean water, reduce flood risk, store carbon and provide a home for wildlife. Get outdoors and visit one today if you can!

Missed this from last year via . Climate change already affecting distribution & activity of invertebrates, many of which transmit pathogens. Australian Society for Parasitology first Aus scientific society to declare ecological emergency

I am not a 'insect decline denier'. I am an insect ecologist, of course I am concerned about the loss of insect biodiversity. But I think we can do better on insect & media coverage if we want more people to engage with

Here's an anecdote, not evidence for anything other than my experience that day. One night in late Nov 2019, we drove 70 km up east coast of Tasmania after dark. The entire way, clouds of thousands of insects swarmed in the headlights. Hardly any made it onto the windscreen

The windscreen phenomenon is classic anecdata used to claim . While it's true many people see fewer bugs on windshields these days, there are lots of possible reasons for this other than decline

When I critique the narrative, it's amazing how many people reply with a 'gotcha' anecdote about how they've seen fewer insects in their local patch. This is sad, but is not evidence of global decline
