“Impact” is not a verb.
-
Is it not? It seems documented as such in many dictionaries.

From the excellent Prodigal Tongue by

it is now. dictionaries describe, they don’t prescribe (or maybe more accurately, they should and shouldn’t.) if a formation gets wide enough traction to be generally understood, it, well, doesn’t necessarily stop being wrong, but does become accepted use.
-
Sure it stops being wrong, otherwise legal documents would read like Beowulf
-
They kind of already do...

-
Right, language is fluid and changes over the ages. Once it’s accepted colloquially it’s generally accepted for that use.
-
Y’all are describing the tension between Descriptivism & Prescriptivism wonderfully

HR is a big joke in any company. Be careful who you trust with your grievances...they will hold it against you. NO-they are not on your side. They are the side of the COMPANY.
-
It depends on the size. If it’s a large publicly owned one, I agree. Smaller companies ‘ HR try to keep talent & iron problems out.
-
NO - you are wrong
-
HR departments exist to keep up with employment legislation and make sure the company doesn't breach it/ can't be sued for breaching it. That's it. That's why companies spend money on them. Not for the benefit of employees.
-
There are some incredible companies out there who have HR teams that work very hard to provide benefits in an attempt to make their employee’s lives better. I’m sorry you’ve had bad experiences, but they aren’t universally bad. Hoping you find something better out there soon!!
-
Yeah I know but I was asked to give a comment based on my experience and I did. I worked in the field as one of the good guys. So hope things are progressing and for allowing me to answer this comment with my experience.
-
Companies with HR departments like John is describing are companies that currently find it profitable to give their employees certain benefits. They are a small percentage of employers and their policies/attitudes towards their staff are always subject to change.
-
As in as soon as you have any thing - as minor as workman’s comp to sexual harassment. HR circles the wagons even if you’re one of them. I can’t imagine working at big corps like Fox or CBS- hushing people up. There are good people in HR- but in the end they protect enployER

librarians do, in fact, still exist
-
THANK YOU. Also working as a librarian outside a library (such as in the entertainment industry or corporate libraries) doesn’t make you less of a librarian.

I’m a Metadata Coordinator at a film studio. I manage all metadata for new film releases so they’re properly archived & can be resold on future digital platforms.
-
Basically I’m the one who makes sure say Mission Impossible Fallout’s rating is captured for India & synopses captured in Hindi if it’s sold to Amazon India.
-
Most folks don’t realize that film release metadata (titles, synopses) is usually translated into a minimum of 30 languages (more for big releases) & 20+ countries require legal rating certificates. It’s a lot of content to manage & a lot of films come out per year.
-
This sounds like such a fascinating job! Kudos
-
Its a lot of fun! And it really teaches you a lot about cultural differences based on how countries view different content. There’s a wide range of ways countries tackle violence, sexuality, drugs, & profanity in folk.
