I find this so frustrating. It's just a piece of clothing. A three year old girl sees her mum in a flowery dress, so she wants to wear a flowery dress too, and it's fine for her to wear it. But if she sees her mum wearing a hijab then granting her wish is "child abuse"?https://twitter.com/MaajidNawaz/status/1050068638735196160 …

.@marksandspencer facilitates medievalism by selling children’s hijabs in the school-wear category. It’s their right to choose profit over values. But it’s our right to shame them for doing so. Little girls are told it is “immodest” to show their hair. And blessed be the fruit pic.twitter.com/I5d7csTsiL

If hijab is just a piece of clothing, like a dress, is it okay in God’s eyes for a Muslim woman to take it off & wear a flower in her hair outdoors, in front of marriageable men. Just like people replace their dresses for jeans?

Maajid I usually agree with roughly 100% of your views. Help me to understand- why can't a parent decide how they want to raise their kid? No one sees young kids as 'attractive' but if a parent feels it will be easier long term to get them used to wearing it early, isn't that ok?

It's an objection to Marks & Spencer selling them to children aged as young as 3, and therefore normalising such clothing. Their parents are not Marks & Spencer.

I dunno. That just doesn't bother me. M&S sells clothes. I don't see it as their role to decide what clothes are good and what clothes are bad, unless, as I said, we are talking about facilitating real abuse, and I'm just not convinced this is abuse, even though it's not for me.

You don't think putting that item of clothing on a 3 year old (who does not have any capacity at all to understand the meaning behind it) is abuse? Maybe not, but is it indoctrination? Divisive? Regressive? I'm not saying it's unlawful, I'm saying M&S made a bad ethical choice.

I don't know. We all have to make choices for our kids and there are all sorts of things I see other parents do that I wouldn't do myself, and probably many things I do that others wouldn't. Many people pierce babies ears... isn't that a similar concept? The child gets no say...

I don't think it's a great comparison but yes I would apply the same criticism to many other things, including ear piercing. Personally I think religion should be an adult only choice but that's not a fight I'll ever win.

I'm sure we can both agree that putting a kid in a Tottenham shirt is worthy of a call to childline though

Ha definitely. To be honest, I'm Jewish & my sons have been circumcised, which certainly falls into this category. Perhaps that's influencing my viewpoint... You mentioned indoctrination earlier, which we're all against but there's a fine line between education & indoctrination.

Yes I was going to mention circumcision/fgm, which I don't agree with for the same reasons. It depends on the subject right? I'd argue faith falls in the latter category. It's compelling, subjective, non-factual, irreversible in a lot of cases
