(automated affect metrics) in the classroom aren’t only being entrusted to judge what student activity falls within “acceptable boundaries” (of aggregated datasets), but concurrently create disincentives that constrain one’s ability to operate w/ unconstrained agency.

Great panel on When Not to Design, Build, or Deploy! To which importantly adds "When to dismantle?"

Emotion detection can both be pseudoscience and also have utility. That's exactly the problem: that it will be used in and have effects on the world, and the utility of such a thing will only be that it benefits those who deploy it.

Great suggestion from on anti-technosolutionism: "Computer scientists are well-placed to tell policymakers what computing can't do!"

Great talk and paper! How do we think about algorithmic explainability for sepsis, something doctors don’t think of as “explainable”?

Nature Machine Intelligence asked and me to write a reflection at the end of 2019 on our earlier piece ("AI Safety needs social science"). It's been printed up alongside some other reflections:

I'm SO excited to see this project make its way to 2020. Very proud to have pitched this notion of 'positionality' to a team that could not just catch on but RUN RUN RUN with it! Congrats and will be following the conversation from BOS!

So. Facebook is as powerful as the Ring of Sauron, but less powerful than nicotine. It's like sugar or bacon fat: we can't help but like it, except politicians should be able to cram it down our throats. And up on reflection, the best policy is to do nothing. Got it.

Friends outside India, please amplify what is happening in Delhi right now. Terrifying armed attacks and siege of a university by right wing goons, MEDICAL TEAMS and media persons attacked, electricity cut off around campus and police quietly watching

For those of you who didn’t live through the invasion of Iraq, here is what is about to happen: 1. There will be a MASSIVE propaganda push (by Republicans) to frame this act of war as a moral necessity and to act like anyone who opposes it is working for “the enemy.”
