When I started noticing the transition to a Battle Royale game, as a writer, I was crushed. There’s no story in BR games & because of that, no one would care about my writing. My lead & mentor had left the project & I was left alone not knowing if I still had a job or a purpose.
Weeks went by with no one asking me for anything. I sat around building the lore of Titanfall more & more for reasons unknown. I wrote short stories about the history, I made comics about characters, & I even tried to draw a universe map....using Microsoft Paint.
Everyday I assumed I’d be let go, until one of our directors asked me how the game could fit in the Titanfall universe. Next, marketing is coming to me for lore, our CFO is coming to me for names of the game, our amazing designers & artists start talking to me about characters...
Holy crap! This is a character game! Character IS story. Pathfinder, Gibraltar, Mirage, & Lifeline came up first. I got myself a Character Lead to help me & we started building these characters together as realized & fully-fleshed out as we possibly could.
The thinking was: if we could make people care about these characters, then they would care about the story - even if there was limited space for one. That’s all I cared about - investment.
Over the last year, these stories & characters have reached more eyes & touched more fans than everything I’ve done before combined - including Titanfall & Titanfall 2.
I’m no longer alone. I now have an amazing team of writers (@tommiecas, @ashsmashreed, & Mo) & still get to work with the amazing, passionate team at @Respawn who produces incredible, mind blowing work, & fans who devote themselves to our world.

It's always darkest before the dawn. Apex Legends is the proof of that for me.
Thank you for all your hard work. It's so amazing to have a story with a BR. Seeing how every character is connected and came to be really helps connects the players and characters. I'm so excited to see what you have in store for year 2 of apex.
I remember hoping if there would be some story to Apex; I first dropped and felt the energy of something hidden. The speculation, the time and energy spent into details, it all just screamed at me to pay attention and be ready for the beginning of lore. Now I'm so invested. :')
