Oooh, I hadn't thought about any folklore it might've been based on! But no, the pre-evolution seems to imply that it's so psychic that it can read emotions from many creatures at once, and that sort of overload can hurt it if the people ain't super duper chill

Honestly I read into it that the poor Pokemon can't handle emotions due to the super strong psychic power it possesses and unfortunately reads all and any strong emotion as hostility by the sound of the other bios. I think it just wants to be left alone due to emotional overload
