I feel like a lot of US citizens don’t quite get how hard it is to get an immigrant visa even if you are super qualified—many friends/family have struggled w the H1-B lottery or spent months applying for an O1 or got denied entry even though they have MIT degrees/great jobs/etc

it's even more confusing if the immigrant parents of 1st gen Foo-Americans get naturalized after their kids are born -- do their parents become 1st gen now? 0th? 2nd? (Is naturalization even a useful metric for a term that's about cultural experience?)

this is ambiguous because there are really two terms, "Xth gen immigrant" and "Xth gen Foo-American" (or just "Xth gen American", and there's an off by one error between the logical choice of starting point for each, but they get used interchangeably so it's all confusing

tip: if you're going through the biometric passport gates, lay your passport flat with its spine against the corner, do not push it in (American machines usually want you to push it in)

it is extremely funny to me that the phrase "death of the author" is based on a French pun/reference that is lost in english, thus erasing the original authorial intent
