Duncan Jones’s posts

Today marks 5 years since dad died. We are all a little sad, coping individually in our own ways. But it’s both remarkable & delightful that dad is still so clearly loved by so many. Yes, he’s missed... but with so much of “him” in the work he made, he’s clearly still here. ❤️

Elizabeth Warren. Socialists call her a capitalist, right wingers call her a socialist, and through it all she remains the most poised, smartest person in the room. If she wasn’t a woman, she’d already be nominated.

Im actually pretty cheery today! Dad lived ten lives in the years he had! There are many lessons he taught me, but todays most important one is this; don't beat yourself up. Ever. Learn, pick yourself up, & go do something new & brave!

You know why most film makers are liberal? Because our job is to make you care about situations & people. And to do that, we think a lot about that kind of shit & channel it into our work. You don’t care about other people? This is not the job for you.

Creative arts can be painful. I remember my dad being beaten up numerous times by critics, only to have those same people come back 5/10 years later & say that in retrospect the work was ahead of its time. Was even revolutionary! Be patient. Good work proves out in the end. 🤓

I have 2 kids. 2 1/2 years & 9 months old respectively. I’ll tell you something I never see anyone admit... they are exhausting, frustrating & life-destabilizing. They are rarely fun. Sure, smiles are great, hugs are lovely, but it’s HARD & not obviously a good choice in life.

I think the US and EU may need to consider placing sanctions directly on those British government officials working to protect Russian oligarchs from UK sanctions.

Lazarus was one of the last things dad created before he died. I know he was incredibly excited about it: working with new people in a new medium. His favorite place to be. As tired as he was, he was clearly loving it! The original London production will be streaming in Jan.

Just fancy paying my respects to the late and utterly great character actor Pete Postlethwaite. I miss being able to see him pop up in a movie and know he will make it even better.

I remember being on the set for this shoot, meeting Mr.Crosby and then the two of them singing and thinking "oh! They're singing that song dad was practicing in the kitchen!" 😂

@ManMadeMoon is this or was this your favourite Christmas song when you were 6. My Nan introduced me to this song when it was released. Loved it ever since. Not truly Christmas until this is played 🎄

I feel sickened for Britain. A man who is well known to be a liar, a bully, a racist & a double dealer will now preside over the UK for the next 5 years, will force through a Brexit that helps his mates, devastates the NHS & sells off Britain for spare parts.

Got a bit emotional while wrapping tonight. Didn’t occur to me till tonight that when i named my daughter Zowie i would eventually be writing “To Zowie, from Dad,” exactly like my dad did for me when i was little. Ghosts of Christmas past.

I was kind of hoping this deep into the lockdown, we would have started to talk about how we could make the world a little better when this is over, rather than just revert to the unsustainable shit-show we’ve been trapped in for decades.

Pretty sure this fucker keeps on using my dad’s music just to annoy me personally. (Joke. I’m way below his radar.)

Just heard another great storyteller, the inimitable Nicolas Roeg left us today. What an incredible body of work he’s left us with! All my love to his family. Thank you for making so many brave choices, & giving this strange little lad in pajamas an ongoing love of filmmaking.

Odd thing about my dad being dead... i feel like hes still around. Not due to some morbid belief in an afterlife, but because google keeps notifying me of “news” he’s apparently responsible for. Must admit... it’s weirdly comforting.

8th of Jan again. A strange feeling for me. I know how excited dad was to have a grandson on the way, & I made this card for his birthday having told him a month earlier he was going to be a grandad. Makes me smile at our shared goofy sense of humour. 🤓 Happy birthday dad!

As an atheist, i value my allotted time on this Earth at an absolute premium. It’s all I get. So when religious folk press their beliefs into the political sphere, messing with my rights, promising to improve my position in their ecumenical Ponzi scheme... i take umbrage.

Hugs. Just... great big, wrapped-up, comforting, loving, unjudgmental, accepting hugs to all today. Hug someone today like they are going on a long trip. Hug ‘em like they saved your dog. Hug ‘em without saying a word, then go about your business. Hug ‘em till they sigh.

I understand where Ivanka is coming from... Reminds me of that afternoon i wandered up to my dad and Freddie Mercury who were in a furious argument, & i solved it by telling them their new song just needed a car chase! Kids will negotiate the darndest things!

Can hear my dad cackling as i sit in a bathroom, struggling to put together a keyboard for the kids Christmas present. The number of times he did this only to sit, glum faced on Christmas morn, instrument ignored as I chose play with the box instead... 😂

The problem with being half British and half American at this particular moment in time is that on the one hand, “what the fuck” and on the other hand, “no seriously. What the actual fuck?”

Anybody else keep voice massages from those close to them who’ve died? I do. Listen to them once in a while. Keeps them alive for me, in a small bit important way. Memory alone is too malleable.

This is where people feel compelled to say “i wouldn’t change it for the world!” But you know... Of course I’d reconsider! It’s exhausting! Its banal! It’s like looking after a dog you can’t housetrain. What it is, is that it is. & they are mine. Hopefully they turn out ok.

Dad’s tattoo. The serenity prayer in kanji. Dad was a recovering addict. Was for most of my life & the prayer was powerful & important to him. Generations tend to mirror one way or another & the importance of these words have grown on me as I identify & fight demons of my own.

I will never cease being fascinated by genetics and what gets passed down from one generation to the next. The physicality is the obvious layer, but how much else... dad and my grandad... and I can only assume, my future too.

Had a thought. My dad had an insatiable hunger for new music & was always chomping to share bands he was excited by. Grandaddy and Arcade Fire come to mind. He hasn't been around for nearly 7 years now. What bands from these past 7 years do you think he would have loved?

Small personal note here. My dad had a terrible fear of flying. I remember sitting next to him, watching his knuckles turn white as he dug his fingers into the arms of his chair every take off, every landing. Turbulance. Yet he flew all over the world for work & pleasure.

From what my dad told me about his love of this legend growing up, it’s very likely he would not have taken the path he did without the huge influence of Little Richard. One of the highest of the high. Enjoy whatever’s next, Superstar.

I’m going to face 2020 with an open mind. That’s my promise to myself. The teens have been devastatingly shitty years, taking people from me, hurting the people I love & making even the positive moments bitter, but life is what it is. So let’s go, 2020. I’m not backing down.
