Seems like the infosec cert debate is going again, so I'm going to share my experience. Contrary to popular belief, I didn't get a job as a result of stopping WannaCry. I'm actually still working for the company that hired me back in 2015.

My certs showed me that I can read a 1000 page book and pass a test.

I suspect you'll even be able to return to the US and fly all over the world one day (thinking of
@kevinmitnick as evidence that this is possible). Whistling nuclear launch codes into telephones *has* to rank higher than banking malware on the severity scale

Don't forget the Logic bomb that was in his car lol.

I completely agree. I was struggling with $ a bit when ohhh was in school since I paid tuition out of pocket. To substitute certs, I did projects and competitions. Frankly, doing well in cyber defense competitions can easily sub for certs like a Security+ or even a CEH.

Most certs only prove that you knew something at some point of time. Your blogposts prove that you can develop and improve your knowledge over time (and transfer it to others).

BTW I also got my first (and some of the subsequent jobs) without a cert just through recommendations from others who had seen me in action :)

Only cert I absolutely recommend (US-based) is Security+, and that's only because many companies require it, for purposes of getting some security clearances.
