I think it was Cory Doctorow
@doctorow who said if someone puts a lock on something of yours but doesn't give you the key, then the lock isn't there for your benefit. And they rekey Teslas over the air? Just wow. - Još 1 odgovor

I don't know, it's almost like hundreds of years of fighting crime in meatspace might have something to teach us about protecting cyberspace.

Pretty easy to make a key. Steel a lock. Reverse engineer the key. For extra credit, replace the lock in working order. Not sure if that helps, but it seems relevant.

Yup this paper explains how anyone with a key to that mastered system could figure out the bitting for the master key discreetly and non-destructively, master key bitting is no secret https://www.mattblaze.org/papers/mk.pdf

Nothing to see here! In fact, it's unethical of you to alert folks to this issue. Only closed groups should be aware of this (someone whispers in my ear) Wait... we're not talking OSTs? I'm confused... how is it there's so many parallels? Huh... how odd.

Pretty sure somebody knows. My money is on paying a disgruntled USPS employee for one, or a seasonal staffer somehow hanging on to one. Her words make it sound like she’s stunned. Which will parallel Congress’ reaction when their desired encryption backdoor is exploited.
-
Well some USPS were held up at gunpoint until they gave up their key.
